Marriage of John Moss & Martha ? circa 1794 probably in Barking, Essex
« on: Tuesday 10 February 15 12:00 GMT (UK) »
I am researching a Moss Family and John Moss (b. circa 1764) married a Martha and they had 3 children baptised in Barking - John (1795), Sarah (1797) & William (1799).  Can anyone help me verify the marriage of John & Martha?

Hi

It seems a bit long in the tooth, to have a first child at 31, in those times, I wonder if there were other children born, but in a different area.

Where do you get John's, year of birth from

No trace of a marriage in Barking 1790=1795 but the children were baptised there
John born 06/04/1795 baptised 03/05/1795
Sarah born 14/01/1797 baptised 12/02/1797
William born 11/12/1798 baptised 06/01/1799

Are you basing the marriage place on the children's baptisms?

Thanks for your replies - questions answered as follows -

1. Jolee - Yes, I am assuming marriage in Barking since children baptised there.
2. MargP - Familysearch Pedigree Resource file - https://familysearch.org/search/tree/results?count=20&query=%2Bgivenname%3AJohn~%20%2Bsurname%3AMoss~%20%2Bspouse_givenname%3AMartha~%20%2Bdeath_place%3A%22East%20Ham%2C%20Essex%22~%20%2Bdeath_year%3A1835-1835~&collection_id=%282%203%29
3. Jackie - John & Martha not found on 1841 census

The marriage of John & Martha in Cirencester in 1789 produced two children - Mary Ann (1792) & William (1797), both baptised in Cirencester, Gloucestershire.  It's a long long way from Barking - in fact I'm sure you're 'barking up the wrong marriage!'

The familysearch tree which lists John Moss' death as 11 Dec 1835 is actually his burial date.  He was 71 years old and of East Ham, as per the original entry on SEAX.

However, there is a baptism in East Ham 19 Nov 1797 William son of John and Mary Moss, and there is also the baptism of Randell Moss 9 Jun 1799 to the same couple, so its more likely to be that John rather than the one from Barking, although would need further research through the East Ham registers to confirm.  They're low resolution and not clear when you enlarge them to read. :-X
