Eltham / Eltom / Eltam of Bampton
« on: Thursday 12 February 15 09:24 GMT (UK) »
Henry Eltom of Bampton made his will on 14 March 1683. I don't know when he died but he says he is "fickel and weake of body" so I suspect it wasn't long after the will was made.
He leaves his messuage to his son John and his heirs forever but only after the decease of his wife Winifred. When John inherits he has to give £5 to each of Henry's other two sons Henry and Antony. If John predeceases Winifred (and dies without issue), the house goes to son Henry and his heirs forever upon Winifred's death. Henry has to give Antony ten pounds after he inherits.
All goods and chattels are left to Winifred.

Twice in the will he refers to Winifred as his now wife which might imply she was his second wife and perhaps not the mother of any or all of his sons. From the order of inheriting I would assume that John is the oldest and Antony the youngest and that John had no children when the will was written.

I have a number of Elthams (with spelling variants) from Bampton on my tree but cannot fit this group in anywhere.
I have been looking for a Henry born around 1630, marrying about mid 1650's, producing three sons (and maybe other children who die before 1683) John, Henry and Antony from marriage date onwards. Then possibly being widowed and marrying Winifred before 1683.

The best I have is a Henrie bapt 20 Apr 1634 to William and Elinor (nee Shepherd) but the only sons I have for this Henry are Richard, James and Henry baptised in the 1660's.

Please can anyone find a John and Antony either belonging to this Henry or any other one.

Hi Liz,

I don’t have  much to offer but to tidy up your list, here are some details;

Bampton;
Mar;  6-7-1606 Henry Eltam to Elizabeth Shorte

Bur; 25-6-1684 Henry Elton
        17-1-1706 Winifred Eltome - “wid”

These are taken from the transcripts issued by the Oxfordshire FHS CD (OXF-WIT 04)

Have you tried the OFHS as they do offer a search  facility at a reasonable fee and may be able to find  more entries for you (ie.  John & Anthony)

Thank you very much, I had the marriage of Henry to Elizabeth Shorte, but as it is in 1606, I had estimated that Henry's year of birth to be around the early 1580's, so the Henry who wrote the will is more likely to be his grandchildren's generation.
The two burials are likely to be the Henry who wrote the will and his wife. As Winifred outlives him by quite a number of years, she may be somewhat younger and possibly second wife as the wording of the will implies.
The baptisms I have for Henry (and Elizabeth Shorte) are Mary 1606, William 1609, Margery 1612, James 1616 and Clement 1619. Only 5 in a range of 13 years so there could be several more to fill in the gaps.
I also have a John baptised 1635 - father Henry (mother unnamed) which I can't fit in anywhere.  It is too late to be Henry and Elizabeth (Shorte) but would fit in if they had a son Henry around 1610ish who fathered this John.

The only son of Henry and Elizabeth that I have found any descendants for is William.

Lizzie

Bearing the info in here with that in your other post then to open up the search to ELTON etc there are some possibilities - have you done that or shall I go back to your other post and have another look?

As Elton is a much more common and widespread name, I have only so far considered Elton if it occurs in the locations where my Elthams are from. I have found several Bampton and Steventon (Berks) records where there seem to be transcriptions with both versions for the same person, possibly one is the parish record and the other is the BT.
