Two Baptisms in Barton for the same Child
« on: Thursday 12 February 15 19:06 GMT (UK) »
I have a strange question to ask about Barton in North Yorks. A child Susannah CHARGE was born in March 1755 (I think) and was baptized in St Cuthbert's Church on 26 Mar 1755. She was baptized again on the 7 Apr 1755 at St Mary's Church! As Barton was quite small at the time, I wondered why there were two Churches and why Susannah was Baptized in both.
The two Churches were amalgamated in 1840 (they had both become quite ruinous). Can anyone explain why Susannah might have been baptized in both Churches?

Regards
Keith

Hi Keithtug

Looking at the Bishop's Transcript's for both churches, Thomas Charge is recorded as having been buried on April 13 1756 at St Cuthbert's and St Mary's.

The same clergyman, William Jackson, signs the BTs in both places. So it appears he was officiating at both churches. Going through the pages he seems to have done this for several years. Sometimes he signs as Minister and other times as Curate. Probably he was a poor record keeper.

Thanks for that extra bit of info, Venelow. I had noticed that William Jackson had signed both registers.

Probably doesn't apply in this case, but i have several Non-Conformist families who baptised their children in both their own Non-Conformist chapel and the local parish church (C of E)

I also have a case of the eldest child of a family being baptised at the parish church where the parents were living, and then again a few weeks later back in the mothers home village parish church
