Hi Zena,

Have a look at either AVG or Zone alarm, both have free versions and will load on 8.1

Hope this helps

Cheers

I have a laptop with Window 8.1 and I use AVG free. I've used it all all my previous computers with no problems.

ESET - not free but 100% effective in my experience - and according to my friendly IT professional.

I had problems with AVG and Norton, hence the change.

I used to use ZoneAlarm but once I got Windows 8 - now upgraded to 8.1 my husband told me that it has it's own inbuilt anti virus etc. so I've not added any other.  I don't know if that is true, but I've not had any problems since I got this new laptop when Windows 8 first came onto the market - so far  ::)

Kaspersky Internet Security without a doubt is one I would recommend.

Microsoft now use 'Windows Defender', you should find it in Control Panel.

I'd echo roopat's recommendation of ESET, I have it on my netbook which is low spec and never had an issue.  I have AVG Internet Security (the paid one) on my laptop and even with 8gb RAM it slows everything when doing an update.  That said, I've never really had an issue with it, just wouldn't recommend it for anything than a very recent PC and I've been using it too for many years.
