Mortgage Document - 1896 - Completed with thanks!
« on: Friday 13 February 15 15:17 GMT (UK) »
Hi all. I recently got copies of the title deeds to some of the house my family owned in the 19th Century. I'm currently transcribing a mortgage my 3x Great Aunt Martha Storey had in 1896, but am struggling on one word.

It comes midway down starting...

"Firstly ???? those pieces or parcels of ground..."

It's a solicitor or their clerk's fancy writing. I'm afraid I'm not sure what this style of writing is called? If anyone can help, please. :)

Thanks so much.

To me it's just normal late 19th century handwriting.....very neat too I may add  ;)

I think after 'Firstly' are just some filler marks [legal documents abhor a vacuum] OR possibly
if later before there is a 'Secondly' there may be some more 'Firstly' as in 'Firstly one'. 'Firstly two' OR possibly a mistake was make, scrubbed out & these marks put in over the 'deletion'.

Hello josey - and thanks for the prompt reply!

I do agree that it is very neat writing, but I was referring to the bold font style of the word I can't make out.

I did check further and on the second page, there is a "Secondly ???? the share and interest of..."

It's the same word as on the first page, and the same word is even on the following line. At least I think it is the same word. There are a few of the bold words in the mortgage.

Thanks!

The word is 'All'  :)

Of course - I have been reading old Scottish legal deeds for 17 years & should have seen that. The subjects in these normally start 'All and Whole'. Can't win them all....
