Bonachi, Bonachit

Can anyone help with my family tree, my gggrandfather's name was Nicholas Bonachit, that was the name written down on the ships manifest and that he came from Trieste, Italy, he was a seaman, and so was his father, his parents names were Marcello and Catarina with no last name. Nicholas was born on the 25th December 1834.

Hi Saddles

Going by the ships manifest which he worked as a seaman from Sydney and Hobart many times, said that he came from Trieste, Italy. Going by here say is that he arrived to Australia from Liverpool in 1856 on the ship "Sir W F Williams" which is the same ship his future wife and her two sisters were on. I have got info on his wife Euphemia Fraser and her two sisters Janet and Ann Fraser who were named as passengers on the ship but nothing of him. I am not quite sure where he came from.

Thank you Saddles for your help, it is so hard trying to find info on someone when there is not much to go on. Would Bunietach be Austrian or German and why would he say that he came from Trieste. I know that the Crimean war was on at that time, perhaps he was running away from that, but his last name has got me stumped. The name Bonachit, could that be Bon a chee, with the accent it probably sounded like there was a t on the end of it.

The "of what nation" on the manifest is supposed to be their native place, so he is saying that he was born in Trieste. 

If I were to have a guess, I would say the name may be BONNICCIA which would account for the 't' when it was written, or perhaps BONNACCI or BONNICCI (pronounced as you say, bonnarchi/ichi with a soft 'ch').

How is the name pronounced now?

The name now is Bonnitcha (Bonni cha with a silent t) completely different from Bonachit. Going by what your saying is the name has completely changed......lol, this is going to fun.....

Unfortunately both Nicholas and Euphemia were illiterate so an Italian accent and a Scots accent were always going to be a recipe for disaster
