Ancient Order of Druids, Cumberland BC
« on: Saturday 21 February 15 17:52 GMT (UK) »

Does anyone have information about the Ancient Order of Druids in Cumberland Bc in 1899, 1900? I think they are associated with the Oddfellows. How do I pursue information on members of that time. Are they any records? I am researching my family history.

Regards,

One thing you'd know for sure, they'll not be very Ancient!!
Threlfall (Southport), Isherwood (lancs & Canada), Newbould + Topliss(Derby), Keating & Cummins (Ireland + lancs), Fisher, Strong& Casson (all Cumberland) & Downie & Bowie, Linlithgow area Scotland . Also interested in Leigh& Burrows,(Lancashire) Griffiths (Shropshire & lancs), Leaver (Lancs/Yorks) & Anderson(Cumberland and very elusive)

The Ancient Order of Druids was a friendly society as were the Oddfellows. A Friendly Society is a voluntary mutual organisation whose main purpose is to assist members (usually financially) during sickness, unemployment or retirement, and to provide life assurance. Friendly societies have been governed by legislation in the United Kingdom for more than 200 years the first Friendly Society Act was introduced in 1793.

There were two organisations ‘Ancient Order of Druids’ (AOD), and the ‘United Ancient Order of Druids’ (UAOD).

I don't think the United Ancient Order of Druids was related to the Masons. It was at one time. I am specifically looking for information about the Grand Grove #3 in Cumberland, British Columbia, Canada and members from 1894 - 1907. Does anyone know if there would be records kept of the Archdruids? My great grandfather belonged to this group. In 1898 is was Dep G. Arch. Thanks for the responses.

The order split over this idea. Part of it continued as before, as an unregulated fraternal society, under the original title ‘Ancient Order of Druids’ (AOD). The part that decided to become a registered friendly society became the ‘United Ancient Order of Druids’ (UAOD). These two societies went their separate ways and both became enormously successful.
