Gabriel Place, Calverley Road, Tunbridge Wells
« on: Sunday 22 February 15 09:41 GMT (UK) »
When looking for Wm Manwaring (b 1802) in the 1861 Census I have come across Gabriel Place in Calverley Road. Can anyone tell me where exactly that would have been? I know the town well and could relate it to modern day places.

I took a look at the 1861 census and see that it is in the section of Calverley Road between the 5 ways intersection (Calverley/Grosvenor/Mount Pleasant etc) and the next street east (Camden Rd).

It appears in the census next to or very near N0. 4 Calverley which puts it near the 5 ways intersection . The old Grosvenor Tavern was at No. 1 but it was demolished to make way for the Calverley Place shopping complex. The entrance to it is exactly where the Grosveor Tavern was. The next building up from there is a 2 sty red brick building with shops at street level and apartments above. I believe this is what was referred to as Gabriel Place. There are lots of postcard views of this part of Calverley Road.
