McMillan
« on: Tuesday 05 July 05 18:43 BST (UK) »
http:// My great grandmother Margaret Jane McMillan of Ballyhenry, Parish of Newtownards married Hugh Paterson of Ballyhenry, Parish of Newtownards on 14 May, 1853. They then set up home in Glasgow. I know only that Margaret Jane McMillan's parents were namely, Robert McMillan and Agnes nee Crawford. I also know of a brother of my great-grandmother's namely, Robert McMillan who set up business in the boot and shoe trade in Nottingham, England. The said Robert married late in life a Miss Dent of the famous Dent's Gloves company. Is there anyone out there who is related in any way to Margaret Jane McMillan of Ballyhenry. She died at Glasgow in 1893.

Hi Strathaven

I too have a Margaret Jane McMillan/en her parents were John McMIllian and Agnes Leeburn.

John and Agnes had children called Margaret, Rachel, Robert ,and James.

Most of our family were in the Ballyhenry Carnmoney areas...(see names below).

Iam just wondering if your Robert and My John could have been brothers....... :)

Agnes parents could have come from scotland

I regret to say that there can be no connection as siblings with Robert McMillan since his mother was namely Agnes: nee Crawford. Thanks for getting in touch.
The thing is, however, there could be family connections somewhat wider on the line. I have a photograph of the said Robert with my grandfather (his namesake). He did so well in business in Nottingham that he was known widely throughou the family folklore as 'rich uncle Robert'. Note he married late in life a Miss Dent of the Glove Manufacturer family namely Dent's Gloves - so we know where the money went eh!

I have a GG Grandfather, John McMullan, who was a boot and shoemaker. It's difficult to know the proper spelling of his name. It is said he was disowned due to his marriage choice. I don't know where he was born, but he married Margaret Orr at St Margaret's Church (Church of Ireland), Downpatrick, County Down in 1845. They had a Son Arthur there in 1845 and they emigrated to Quebec about 1847 where they had my G Grandfather William John.

It's possible John married outside his faith, also.

Just thought there might be a connection due to the shoemaking? A family book also claimed they were from Belfast?

Thanks!!  Tom McMillan (Washougal, WA)
