vera elizabeth page
« on: Tuesday 24 February 15 23:16 GMT (UK) »
 :) :) :)hi all
iam the grandson of vera elizabeth woolman <page>
born  11th of dec 1913  st mary terr whitwick
father herbert page born 1872 ruddington Notts he came to live in whitwick he married  elizabeth ann walker born 1873 green lane whitwick her father was joseph walker  collier  her mother  was  ann walker formerly hurst  whitwick.ann walker had a dau named charlotte ada walker  she married ajohn henry bailey  collier  of the dumps  ,whitwick
they had dau whowas badly burned  in a fire  towhich i have found the inquest from whitwick history group they have put a news paper on line and the inquest is on there  but they don not give the name of the dau was dec charlotte whent to see her mother  three doors away and left the children playing  she whentto see her mother about 1.30 inthe afternoon  last thursday  she had not been gone more then  5 mints  when she heard a scream . the  two children  were  in the yard  playing with  some toy brushes . she left  the door  open not  intending  to be  long. she had  just  made the fire  upthe fire  and the guard  was round  it .when  witness heard  the scream . she saw the child  coming  towards  her  with  a shawl  burning  up one side ,her  mother  put  a rug  round  to put  out the flames and witness went  into  the house  and saw  some  burnt  paper  on the floor ,some  paper  was on the sofathe other  child  aged 5  was still i the garden ,the  deceased was wearing a woolen shawl .witness nursed  her  and subsequently  put  oilve oil  and linseed  oil on the  burns  and  the child  was gigiven  some  physic .she  was burnt  on the arm  .but  she  appeared  to be going on  well and on friday  was singing , on saturday  she  did not  seem so well  and witness went about  11 o clock  in the morning  for the doctor ,who  at9,o clock  in the evening .the child  seemed  sleepy  all day  at 12 .o'clock  midnight  she became  worse  and died  about  1.30 sunday  morning.
the coroner :when the doctor  didnt  come  you think  it necessary  to send for another  doctor?
witness :Dr Hamilton is our  doctor  and we  were  expecting  him  every  minte.
the corner said  he was  glad  to know  that  they  had  provided  a fire guard , but  it  would be much  greater  precaution  if her  husband  got  some  galvanised  wire  netting  and putt round  the  guard  to prevent  a child  getting   its  hand through .he hoped  she would  tell her husband to do that.
ann walker ,grand mother  of the  dec . stated that her dau came  to see her  atabaout  1.30 pm  and had not been  there five mints  before  they heard  the scream witness had  been  washing  her son -in law's shirt  and  she gave  it to her daughter  as soon  as she had  put it through the mangle .witness put a rug  around the child .
the coroner : a very proper  thing  to do .witness proceeding ,said  the arm  was burnt  and she  applied  olive oil  and linseed oil. they  did not  seem to be  deep wounds and witness thought  the child  was going on  well, when  the dedc  was worse  onsaturday  witness advised that the doctor  be sent for  and the mother  went ,shewhent to  the local surgery in whitwick .Dr Archibald,Assisntant to Dr Hamilton ,said that as a rule  the whitwick  hours  of Attendance  were  12 to one ,but  they could  not  always  be there  at those  hours .the first  he heard  of this  case  was  at  the Coalville  surgery  in the evening, he believed a wowan  came up .it was about  9,o clock  when  he went down, immediatly the surgery business was over.he found  the right  hand  and arm  rather  badly burnt.the  upper  part  of the arm  was not so badly  injured  as the  lower  part ,but the child  was suffering  from  septic pneumonia  when  he arrived, that being a coomon  consquence on burns ,the earlier dressings were properly done  and the  child  was wrapped  up in  warm  blankets  and  having  warn drinks . every thing  possible  that  could  be done  seemed  to  have been  done for  the child .Death  was due  to pneumonia  from the shock  due  to  the burn shad the child lived the right hand  would  prbably  have  had to be  amputated  and  possibly the forearm as well.
the coroner  as bad as that
Dr Acrhibald  :yes
the coroner  said  he was glad  to notice the whole  of the facts  seemed  topoint to proper  precautions  being taken.the parenets  had provided  a fire guard  and  the mother  wnet  to her  mothers to fetch  the shirt  while  the children  were out . the child took  advantage  of  the mothers  absence to play  with  fire  as children  some times  would ,and afater  the dec  gotm  onfire  every thing  possible  seemed to have  been done .then  when  the condition  of the child  gave rise  for uneasiness they  at once  sent  for the  doctor.he had  nothing  to say  on  the conduct  of the parents  in the case  except  of  commendation  they  did all theycould .the only  thing  have been done  was the putting  ofwire  netting  inside  the guard ,but  it was easy  to be  wise after the event

the  jury returned  verdit  of  death  from pneumonia  consequent  on  burning  injuries  accidently  received .
