John Batchelor born circa 1800 in Barby, Northants.
« on: Thursday 26 February 15 20:04 GMT (UK) »
I am researching a Batchelor family and have a John Batchelor born around 1800 in Barby, Northants. John Batchelor had married Mary Edmunds in 1817 and they both appear on the 1841, 1851 & 1861 censuses and it clearly indicates John was born in Barby.  Can anyone help me verify John Batchelor's birth/baptism in Barby - several other Ancestry family trees show him to be the son of George Batchelor & Mary French but they did not get married until 1803.  On the census records John Batchelor's age was given as 40 (1841), 51 (1851) & 61 (1861).

A puzzle indeed.

The Northants Baptisms do not show any bpts for John Ba(t)chel(d)or of Barby between 1780 and 1804 (which of course may have been a late bpt).
Similarly the Northants Marriages Index does not show a Mary French marriage to George Batchelor.

Other than the 1804 bpt, this one could fit the bill in the next parish ...

John Bachelor s/o William & Hannah bpt 25 Dec 1799 at Kilsby.

Perhaps he was born before the marriage, chr under the name French, but took the name of his stepfather after his mum married/remarried.

Indeed, Liz ...

From the Northants Baptisms Index

John Knib French s/o Mary French bpt 1800 Apr 20 at Boddington C of E illegitimate

 ???

... but John Knib French married in Boddington in 1824

Have looked at the A***y trees but can't prove the Mary French / George Batchelor connections. Neither do the census links match JB of Barby !!

Have found correct censuses, but they give no more to go on.

Yes, the banns and marriage are online, but can you tell us, please, how George and/or Mary are linked to Barby, or even Northants. Is there census evidence ?

As I mentioned in my initial posting it was only other Ancestry Public Members family trees that were showing John Batchelor (b.1800, Barby, Northants) as being the son of George Batchelor & Mary French.  If you look at those trees having the marriage of George Batchelor & Mary French married 2 July 1803 in Rugby they also show John Batchelor as born to them in 1800 in Barby.  These trees are -
Dunne Family Tree
Fletcher Family tree
Irene Ashelman Family tree
Maule family tree

I've tried contacting the owners of these trees but no reply to date.

Ummm ... Public trees without sources  ???  At the moment I think they are only muddying the waters.

In your research, ragt39, I assume you have got back to John Batchelor of Barby in the censuses, and maybe his marriage. Can you list his children here for us, please ... might help.
