Hannah McDonald 1839?
« on: Wednesday 04 March 15 18:47 GMT (UK) »
Hello All,

I am chasing the parents of Hannah McDonald.  The only information that I have is that she was born in "Swadling Bay" Ireland in 1839 but when I google "Swadling Bay" nothing comes up?

She married John Fish from Lancashire and ended up in Australia. She died in 1899.

Hannah and John had a daughter - Amelia Elizabeth Fish

Any help and information would be greatly appreciated

Many thanks

Jen

Where does the place name "Swadling Bay" actually appear- family record or stor?, certificate? church record?

Has any county ever been suggested?

My initial thought is Swanlinbar but that's maybe because it's a place I know  :)

Hello and thank you for responding so quickly

I am afraid I have a friend helping me with my research and this is the information that she provided and I will not be able to clarify this with her until tomorrow but your suggestion does sound quite likely given the similarity.  It is possibly someones attempt to decipher handwriting on an official document?? I will see if I can find out and let you know.

Thanks again

Jen

It could be a misinterpretation of what is on a document or a phonetic attempt by someone in Australia being told an Irish placename by someone who'd never been there (thinking if it appears on a death certificate could be that husband or children said what they thought the place was called).

Let us know when you hear back about the source. If it is from a document you could post a snippet here for us to have a look at- it may be something completely different than Swanlinbar! (I remember once someone saying a place of a marriage was "Shelhouse" which turned out to be "The Manse" although to be fair it was all run together and did look like "Shelhouse."

Hello Again,
Apparently the information was gained off someone elses family tree online so no way of knowing or ability to decipher it more accurately - sorry?

Disappointing but don't give up yet. Found the same, or similar, online tree which does give Australian death index as the source so would be worth trying to contact tree owner to see about the details and exchanging information if you are both researching the same family.
Have you tried searching for newspaper information on Trove?
