HELP! WHERE DO I GO FROM HERE?
« on: Tuesday 05 July 05 23:09 BST (UK) »
HELLO ALL

I have come to a stumbling block trying to find my GGG grandad James Wilde.

His wife  Margaret Wilde is in the 1881 census as  a widow aged 26 living with her father Thomas Mather and her son - my GG Grandad Thomas aged 3. in Golborne Lancashire, district Leigh.

There is a marriage listed in 1874 Vol 8c page 254 in leigh for Margaret Mather - her husband is listed as James Wilde - but i can't find him in Golborne in the1871 census or anywhere near to this town - I live there -so I know the area well.

If anyone can help ????????????????????

Cheers Jan

Oooh 'er - there are hundreds of James Wilde's and Wild's in Lancashire and we don't have birthplace or age.

If no-one can spot him you may have to send for that marriage cert and then we may have correct age and the name of his father. A helpful brother as a witness would be a bonus ;)

Since you live locally, I think a trip to the St Helens Library (Records Office) might bring results as they have most of the Parish Registers for the area around.  They are very helpful there and I'm sure could point you to the fiches for the local churches, I think most of them are in one box so speed up your search.  As as you know near enough the date you won't have to trawl through years for each.  Hopefully an entry would give you the same detail as there would be on a marriage certificate ie ages, addresses, occupations, fathers names and occupations and as Tricia Q says, the witnesses too.

In 1871 there is a James Wild 17 year old Unm, Coalmine Lab born Liverpool, boarding with James and Maria Ludworth and son William, also 17 in Downall Green, Ashton in Makerfield. RG10/3898 Wigan Ashton in Makerfield Folio 43 Page 12.

Can't find one in the area in 1861, can't pinpoint this James from 1871 either  :-[ :-\

Margaret daur Unm 15 Lancashire St Helens

maybe if the above James is the right one, he might have been boarding with the Rhodens at the time of his marriage.

Hi Everyone

In the 1881 census there is a Margaret Wilde Living in Tanners Lane Golborne, age 26,- a cotton worker -  born in St Helens, she is a widow and has a son Thomas aged 3 (This is my great grandad).  She lives with her father Thomas Mather aged 54 Widower born Rainford (st helens) - a Coalminer, her brother Thomas aged 17, also a Coalminer, and her sister aged 7 named Sarah.

Can anyone find them further back?

So it looks like she was widowed shortly after being married - perhaps if we could find his death, and the birth of Thomas, it may give us some more clues.

Cheers
