Woman as occuoier in Griffiths Valuations
« on: Friday 06 March 15 21:19 GMT (UK) »
In the 1854 Griffiths Valuation a woman who I believe is my GG grandmother is listed ad the occupier. Is it safe to assume that she is a widow at this point?

(Anne Kane of Henfield, Rathaspick, Westmeath).

Thanks!

Hi,
No, It is not a safe assumption. The name means that she was responsible for the rent. She may have been a widow but not necessarily so.

Ok. Would another option be that her parents lived there before her? Or why would a woman be responsible for the rent?

Maybe her man's at sea or working elsewhere to keep the show on the road?

Is it her maiden name or married on Griffith's ?  She may have taken over her parents property ? or a sibling who emigrated.
The Valuation Office in the Irish Life Centre, Dublin 1 have details that follow on from Griffiths.

In my own tree, I have a widowed G G  Grandmother as occupier in Griffiths

It's probably not even safe to assume that this woman is your great-great-grandmother- she could be another relative, or non-relative, of the same name living in the same place.

Yeah, its just been one step forward and two steps back.

The only reason why I think its possible she may be my gg grandmother is due to the surname and where they live. It seems as if there is only 1 house in Henfield, and my ggrandfather was born there.

The name listed "Kane" is her married surname.
