His naval record may or may not help, given he'd left by 1911

Purchasing a copy of the marriage certificate will confirm forenames of the groom - alternatively if you purchased a copy of one of his daughter's birth certificates.
Not able to see the birth for Dorothy on FreeBMD but can see the following:

Third Quarter 1911
GOODSELL Ethel M - Mother's maiden name Smith - Portsmouth - Vol 2b - Page 284
and
Third Quarter 1912
GOODSELL Ivy - Mother's maiden name Smith - Portsmouth - Vol 2b - Page 994

Thanks Priiscilla, I have my grans details from my MUm. Its her father thats proving to be the fun part. As earlier, we all thought he was called samuel but as per a post above, a James John Goodsell married a Amy Phoebe A Smith in POrtsmouth and I sincerley doubt there were 2 ladies with that name around at the same time, so it seems as if he wasnt a samuel but a james john!

OK forget all the Samuel v James John. The 1911 census shows a Samuel John married to a Amy Phoebe Alice with a daughter aged 1 called Dorothy...THis IS the right one. So where did he go as he did a runner after my great Aunt was born

Not as easy to find post-1911 as it was pre-1911 - you did see the 2 lots of census details formatted earlier in the thread ?

Emigration, Street Directories (eg Portsmouth & environs), Rates books, 1939 NI records, Death Index, Wills - tried all those resources ?

am on it now...sort of. Found a Samuel John in the 1891 census living in Lambeth which is right next to Battersea which is in Wandsworth. Born 1881 so that must be him

Now this isnt fun. In the 1911 census he has his DOB as 1880 born battersea. In Battersea in june 1881 a Samuel John Goodsell was also born. Would he have known when he was born???? The sailor in the above was also born in Battersea but now in 1882.  Oh dear..............

I formatted the Census finding for you in my 1st posting .... dont worry about a year or two - it matches well to his FreeBMD Birth Index entry ... and he is consistant about PoB being Battersea in 1891, 1901 & 1911
