EDWIN WEST & ANN (ie) DOBSON MARRIAGE 1879
« on: Wednesday 11 March 15 09:23 GMT (UK) »
I am hoping for some help with the marriage of
Edwin West and Ann(ie) Dobson
1879 March quarter Alderbury

Edwin was born 1853 Upper Woodford, father Samuel West
Annie was born circa 1854 Marlborough, father unknown so far

1861 Edwin is living with parents and siblings in South Newton, Wilts
1871 he is with parents and siblings in Bulbridge Wilton, Wilts

So far I haven't located  a suitable match for Annie in previous census and therefore don't know who her father was

Any help much appreciated

Hi,
Was her name Anne Maria Dobson?
I search by Annie then Anne and 1854 + and - 10 years, in Wiltshire, Anne Maria Dobson was the result born in 1852 in Preshute Wiltshire. The name was corrected from Dreshute.
This Anne is with her parents in the 1861 census, Thomas Dobson and Martha nee Bird. (9 other children)
Residing in Figheldean, Wiltshire. There are a few trees in Ancestry, with no info on her marriage in any of them.
If you need more help just ask, ok.

Hi Maggsie
I did find that one , strange thing is I have a Thomas Dobson marrying Martha Bird but dispensed with Annie it as  it looks as if a relation married a relation, not impossible but could be right, will bear this in mind Maggsie, would love to find the marriage records from the church to clarify who her father was

The couple I have
Edwin West and Annie had a son whose daughter Dorothy Eva West  married Thomas Charles Dobson whose grandfather Thomas Dobson married Martha Bird, her parents if what you have given me is right, if you can understand what I am on about, can't find any other  way to put it

The Dobsons are shown as being born Marlborough as Annie is born according to later census after she married Edwin

Thank you for your quick response

Hi louisa maud,

Not sure if you have their marriage but if not they were married;

1879 Edwin West - Annie Dobson  - Salisbury Register Office or Registrar Attended
This was taken from the Wilst BMD site.

FreeBMD has the marriage ref;
Mar ¼ 1879 Alderbury Reg. Dist Vol;5a, Page; 249

It might be a case of obtaing the marriage cert to find who her father was..

Hi Ribbo
That is them I am sure, to be honest I was hoping someone might help me with her father. As Maggsie said that the FT's online don't show her father, wonder if they have the same problem as me, I am sure they were related, I could be seriously wrong though

Many thanks for your impute

Hi again,

I think in 1871 Annie Dobson is a servant in Richmond Surrey born Hanborough, Wilts
She appears on;
RG10. Piece; 869, Folio; 60, Page;2

Yes Alan, I think that is her again, she must have returned home to marry

Family search are short on Wiltshire records I think otherwise I might well have been able to sort her out by now but I find it strange no one on the FT's have her parents

regards

Have you looked at all the census after Annie was married?
1891 census she has middle initial M

1911 (we are not allowed to give details) it may be worth looking up to see who is boarding with them

If the marriage was in a register office the only way to find details is by purchasing marriage cert

Hi,
Well cousins did marry cousins, you are not allowed to marry a First cousin though.
The places of birth, yes be careful, in census they put what is known to them.
ie.
My husbands grand father was born in Ireland, even on his army records it says that.
When I started to do the tree for his side.....no he wasn't, he was born in Scotland and went to Ireland aged 4 years old. He moved to England and lived in Essex, this is where his father was originally from. His mother was from County Derry.
Everyone of the family were not a happy bunch when I told them he was not Irish.

So the only thing really to do, go to the Parish records and check them.
I know it's a pain, but it's the only way.

There is an Annie Dobson in familysearch.org in the 1871 census born in 1852 in Marborough living and working in Richmond, Surrey.........is this your Annie?
The Garrod family  she is living with.

This site also shows Annie Maria Dobson born to Martha and Thomas Born on the 29th September 1852. in the same place I mentioned Preshute.
