John McKew (McQue) & Margaret Bailey
« on: Wednesday 06 July 05 12:35 BST (UK) »
John McQue (22yrs) m Margaret Bailey (20) on 2/4/1861 newcastle on tyne northumberland. John was a potter and was born in Ireland, father was also John. Margarets father was Thomas. She was born in newcastle on tyne. I'm trying to find out more about John's birth and place in Ireland, family etc. Also of Margaret and her parents and brothers and sisters etc. I tracked a John McKew back to Queens County Ireland however this is not the right one. Any assistance would be really grateful.

Chester,

And the best of luck to you...

A couple of snippets for you...

1)Catholic priests in Newcastle ( i.e St Mary's, St Andrew's.. )
in mid 1800s sometimes included extra bits of info on church marriage records.. such as names of groom and bride's mother's as well as fathers.. and sometimes ( if you ARE lucky) the Irish root County.

( St Patrick's, Felling... priest, at one stage was even recording county, parish and townland)

2) For whatever reasons, the Irish who came to Newcastle and north-east England, were from Irish counties Mayo, Sligo, Leitrim, Roscommon and Donegal.   And some from Down and Antrim. But it is rare to see on Newcastle censuses,  midland and southern Irish Counties recorded as birthplaces.

Hi

Do you have the 1861 Census entry for John and Margaret ?

Resident in the same building, though enumerated as a separate family is 62 year old widowed Elizabeth BALEY with a daughter and Grandson.

In the building next to this another Bailey family.

If you want the details then let me know.

Regards

By Census 1871 John and Margaret have moved to Southwick, Sunderland ( piece 5018 folio 55 page 69) and are McHugh

And the 5 year old Thomas Baley on Census 1861 is on Census 1871 , Thomas McHugh, 15 yr old son of John McHugh.

Full details if you want them

Sorry if this duplicates something already sent - I typed it and it disappeared off somewhere - it's my first time on this site.

I am the great-grandaughter of Ellen McKew (or McCue? - we were never quite sure of the spelling, who I believe was the daughter of Margaret Bailey and John McKew - judging by the correspondence it would fit with what I know. She was born in 1870, her mother's name was Margaret, and she had siblings John, Michael, Bob, Tom, Margaret and Elizabeth (that we know of). They were from Southwick, Sunderland and my Nan (Ellen's daughter) talked of a family link to Cork, Ireland and potters.

I don't know anything further about John and Margaret and their parents, but I can give you Ellen's descendants and some bits of information about her siblings if you want.
