Bateman WARD of Bildeston - are there 2 born abt abt 1776?
« on: Saturday 21 March 15 17:47 GMT (UK) »
Hi
Bateman Ward born 1776 Bildeston, Suffolk and died 1860 Ipswich.  He married Hannah Cullum and they lived in Ipswich.  Their daughter was Hannah Ward born 1800.

There is also a Bateman Ward born abt 1780 from Bildeston who married a Susan Hollox, he died 1859 Bildeston.

I can't find any record of parents for Bateman Ward born 1776 but there is a record for Bateman born 1780 (his parents were Bateman Ward and Elizabeth Jennings).

These cant surely be the same person as they married a different person and died different years, but how many Bateman Ward's could there be born around the same time and same town of Bildeston?  Bateman isn't exactly a common name.

This is so confusing.  If anyone could help find a record of Bateman born 1776's parents that would be much help and greatly appreciated.  Or if anyone could help confirm that there were 2 Bateman's that would be appreciated too.

Thank you :)

It is quite possible that they were cousins.  Have you traced the family back to see if you can find a possible source of the name Bateman, it is quite possibly a mothers maiden name
Census information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

Hello

Thank you for your reply.

That is a possibility that they could be cousins, I'd never thought of that.
I can't seem to find any record of birth/baptism for Bateman born 1776. So haven't been able to get any further on that line.  There is a tree online somewhere for Bateman born 1780 whose father was a Bateman Ward, maybe if I tried to find that and see if there are any other Bateman's in the tree.  I know that the Bateman Ward I'm looking for is not in their tree.
I didn't think of mother's maiden name either, but that too is a possibility.

Thank you so much for your help

There are 3 Bateman Ward's recorded on the Suffolk Burial Index

1/  Buried 17 Jan 1786 Bildeston (no age given)
2/  Buried 23 Mar 1859 Bildeston (age 78)
3/  Buried 2 May 1860 Ipswich Cemetery (abode Ipswich UH/age 88/ died 26 Apr).

Also this info which may prove helpful:
Elizabeth Ward infant daug of Bateman & Susan (late Horrex) buried 1 Oct 1812 Bildeston

Elizabeth Ward, age 66, wife of Bateman, buried 26 Mar 1814 Bildeston -  so given Elizabeth was probably born c1748 it looks highly likely there was an earlier Bateman Ward.

K
ps If you check out the Cosford Database it gives Bateman Ward born 1746 son of John Ward & Susan  http://web.archive.org/web/20080611133922/http://www.cosford-database.co.uk/

Hello

Thank you or your reply and for finding this information, it is very kind of you. I'll take a look at the Cosford Database.

The 1860 burial is for the Bateman Ward in my tree.  He married Hannah Cullum.  He was born about 1776 in Bildeston.
The 1859 death is for the 'other' Bateman Ward born about 1780/1781.

I've found another christening record for Batman Ward (obviously Bateman) on 15 December 1794 with parents John Ward and Mary in Bildeston.  Could this be the christening record for the 'other' Bateman who died 1859?
If so the christening record for 1780 with parents Bateman Ward and Elizabeth Jennings could possibly be for my Bateman Ward?

I know children even got christened when they weren't babies but young children.

It's most definite that all these Bateman Ward's in Bildeston were related in some way.

I'm really hoping that I can find Bateman Ward's (born 1776) parents.  Does anyone think the 1780 christening could be his and not the other Bateman born later.

Thank you
