Anthonissen Family
« on: Sunday 22 March 15 19:06 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I have some questions on the Anthonissen family who's stamvader was Johannes Christoffel Anthonissen, a former slave from Bali. I would like to know if anyone knows when abouts he arrived in the Cape and whether or not he was freed before or after he came to the Cape. He married Sara Cornelia van de Kaap of whom I know nothing about. I would love to know if anyone has information that could lead to further discoveries about her.

Their second child was born in 1768 and their last child in 1786, so it is most likely both the parents were born in the 1740s at the earliest and 1750s at the latest.

AM van Rensburg states as sourced from Heese en Lombard, the following children for the couple:

Quote
b1 Rachel Susanna X Job Jacobs
b2 Johannes Cornelis gebore 1768, X Sophia Thomasse, XX 23 Des 1804 Christina Jacoba Thomasse
b3 Hendrik gebore 1778, gedoop Kaapstad 22 Mei 1785
b4 Abraham gebore 1779, gedoop Kaapstad 22 Mei 1785, X Jacoba Steenveld
b5 Magdalena gebore 1779, gedoop Kaapstad 22 Mei 1785, X 29 Sep 1799 Frederik George Hendrik Ruge, XX 21 June 1807 Johann Rippel
b6 Johanna gebore 1782, gedoop Kaapstad 22 Mei 1785, X31 Aug 1800 Frederik Stricker
b7 Elizabeth gebore 1784 gedoop 22 Mei 1785, X Daniel Jacobus Izaakse, XX 7 Feb 1813 Johannes Carel Kannemeyer
b8 Sara Susanna gedoop 6 Aug 1786, X 4 Jan 1818 Joseph Petz

Kind regards,
Duncan

If you look on familysearch there are scans for a number of the Anthonissen's you are looking for.  Some surnames are spelled as Anthonisen.

While doing the indexing for the Cape familysearch I came across a great number of people with the surname of 'van der Kaap' or 'van der Caap' which I then discovered meant from the Cape i.e. having no surname.

Thank you Nookie, the van der Caap can be very annoying as it was pretty much a bastardy name given to children, especially of slaves, who did not have a father who recognised them or was known to the company. The only other comparison that I can think of is in fiction where bastards in the seven kingdoms get surnames such as snow, stone, rivers ect. really makes finding even her mother difficult.

Thanks for the hint on fs, I am currently now looking through them to see if anything links up, I have the children, who were baptised in bulk, so hopefully can move forward from there.
