Tinplate photo restore please.
« on: Sunday 22 March 15 20:35 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,

Can anybody put a date to this photo on a metal plate?

What would be the best way to store the photo to stop it deteriorating?

Going on advice of Chinakay I have put Restore in subject line.

Many thanks,

Jagoman

Late 1890s would be my best guess, but the only clue is the shoulder style of the lady on the left. The rest of her clothing is covered by her apron and the lady on the right is just a blob :(

I think you should consult a photo conservationist about preserving this, but in the meantime your best bet is to go digital. I think it's a good enough sized scan for restoration here on the board, so all you'd need to do is edit the thread title to include the word Restore.

I have never seen a tintype in that condition before. It looks like it's rusting under the emulsion and flaking it off. Shame :(

Cheers,

Hi Jagoman,

I have had a go but found it tricky to get a good improvement due to the damage has created "valleys" of different lighting I was struggling with around the ladies face.

Sarah

Fantastic Sarah

That has come up better that I thought possible. To quote China the lady on the far right does not look like a "blob" any more you can now see more of her features.

I think that it is possibly the Daw family from Stone in Oxney Kent.

Many thanks

Her clothing is still too indistinct to date, but I still think it's 1890s.

Hi I'm researching the history of my house in stone in oxney. The Daw family owned it for a long time . I don't know if you'd be interested in seeing some documentation.  I'm new on the site so don't really know what I'm doing but presumably there's some way if sharing it! It was amazing to see a photograph of someone who lived here.

Welcome to RootsChat Mummalesage :D how exciting to hear from you.

Yes you certainly can add images to your posts, you do it by clicking on the little orange button that says "attachments and other options" this appears just below the box in which you type.

If you need any further help there is link just below that helps out with more detail on attaching images.

Do you think the family may have been posed outside your house ?

Regards

Sarah

Hi Mummalesage

I am so pleased that someone who lives in the house has seen the photo and confirmed it's their house. We too have a load of photos from Stone in Oxney and Warehorne where the Daw family lived. The mother in law gave us a large carrier bag full of photos from the area.
