Glenstone? Possibly in Dorset?
« on: Saturday 28 March 15 14:46 GMT (UK) »
Query ... RG11/2087 Page14
1881 Census Charlton Marshall
Leonard Long 38 Woodman born Wimborne
Elizabeth Long 29 born GLENSTONE

Can anyone tell me where Glenstone is?  Not listed on Dorset OPC list of parishes, and couldn't find on map; I presumed it was Dorset because this couple lived all their lives in Charlton Marshall.
Many thanks
LC

Could it be Clenstone - there is a Winterborne Clenston in Dorset?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winterborne_Clenston

If you look at the first letter on the census image it is the same as the C in Charlton Marshall which is the next entry.

What is her birthplace on later censuses?  Have you looked for her under her maiden name in 1871

She has died by 1891. I think it is Clenston by the image.

Ooh, thank you very much Groom - well spotted. W. Clenstone is very near to C. Marshall, so I think you are right.

Carol, I don't have Elizabeth's maiden name, have failed to turn up a marriage as yet.  Groom is right, she had died by the time of the next census.  Keep searching!

Regards LC

Following Leonard back through the census to 1851, it appears his parents were Job and Thirza LONG.

On the 25 Feb 1873, there is a marriage in Charlton Marshall of  Leonard (LAWN) to Elizabeth Ann HALL, their ages fit with your Leonard and Elizabeth, Leonard's father is Job (LAWN). Leonard did not sign, he made his mark, so would not be able to see a mistake in the spelling of his surname.

In 1871 Leonard is boarding in Charlton Marshall a few doors away from Elizabeth HALL. To me, this, and the fact there there appears to be no one by the name of LAWN in the area in the census, all points to the LAWN marriage being the one you are looking for.

Well done, Jebber - that looks a perfect fit to me. The combination of father Job and son Leonard in a relatively small place is too much of a coincidence, it must be him.

Glad you agree Groom, it is always good to get another opinion. I can't find anything else that comes any way near.

This looks like Elizabeth Ann Hall in 1861.  Interesting it looks as if her mother wasn't married, which could explain why Elizabeth gives her father as John HOOK on the marriage certificate.
