Mary Ann(e) Theobald possibly from Roudham Nr Thetford
« on: Monday 30 March 15 08:52 BST (UK) »
Trying to find out about Mary Ann(e) Theobald and her family.

Census info indicates that she was born in Thetford.

Married Alfred Edward Debenham at Bardwell, Suffolk in 1843.

Grave stone in St Albans gives her name as Mary Anne but some documents give Mary Ann. Died 1877 aged 56 so indicates a birth in 1821.
Parents may have been a Pelham Courbold Theobald and Anne Hambling
Burt, Cockrill, Craske, Debenham, Double, Grimwade, Grimwood, Hilder, Mayhew, Ray. All from  West Suffolk around the Bury St. Edmunds area.
Simpson, Pittendreigh, Arthur.   Aberdeenshire

Many thanks for that. It seems quite likely that it is her. Probably the tree that I looked at which gave father's name as  Pelham Courbold Theobald should have had William Corbould Theobald. Perhaps a transcription error along the line. Now need to try tracing him and his wife.

Most interesting. It appears that the mother had died before the christening date and that Mary Anne and her brother George John were christened at the same time. So Mother, Ann nee Hambling died between the birth date of 13th June 1822 and Christening date of 9th Feb 1823. I need to do some digging around to see how the father managed to look after the two young babies!

Baptismal record. Took it that the "late" in Ann 'Late' Hambling meant that she had passed away. Of course it could also mean Nee as in Ann 'Nee' Hambling. I have found reference to her on a family tree d 1872, Cheshunt, Herts. No conclusive evidence that this is her though. Crazy thing is that I was in Cheshunt (70 miles from home) looking at family graves 2 days ago. Not from her line though.

Are you by chance linked to the Theobald, Corbould or Debenham families?
If so I may well be able to help you.
All three families had their origins in Suffolk and Norfolk. The Debenham family of St Albans were directly linked to the founders of the shop and estate agents branch.
