Dunham burial / marriage
« on: Saturday 04 April 15 18:53 BST (UK) »
Hello , my 6 x gt grandfather Thomas Cottam married Sarah Turner at Dunham in 1735 ; there is then a further marriage for a Thomas Cottam to Ann Shaw in 1740 . Is anyone able to check Dunham burials for Sarah Cottam c 1738/9 please?
Alternatively the original marriage register for Thomas and Ann in 1740 to see if he was a widow .

Many thanks ,

Gary.

Hello and thank you both very much for your help.  So, it would appear he was married 3 times - Elizabeth , Sarah , Ann - or there was more than 1 Thomas  ???

You do not possibly have baptism records to see if there were overlapping years ?
I have 3 baptisms for the moment ;  Ann 5 Feb 1738 - mother Sarah ;  Sarah 23 Aug 1739 mother ? ; and Mary 23 Dec 1740- mother Ann.

Gary.

They are the only baptisms I can see. It might be a different Thomas but I also found:

Marnham St Wilfrid burial
11 Jul 1740, Thomas COTTAM, son of Thoms., abode Dunham

I couldn't locate a baptism for the above Thomas. Also, I wonder if this is another marriage of the same Thomas:

Laneham St Peter marriage
"Thomas Cottam, of Dunham, w., & Alice Beal, w., 23 Jan. 1757" (Phillimore's Notts Parish Registers, v 18, p 154)

So we have them in one place, the marriages at Dunham are:
26 Nov 1730, Tho. COTHAM & Eliza. WILLSON
10 Apr 1735, Tho. COTHAM & Sarah TURNER
1 Jan 1740, Thomas COTHAM & Ann SHAW

The timing of the wives' burials suggests this may be the same Thomas in these four marriages, but you definitely more evidence (e.g. wills) to confirm this.

Thank you for the additional information .  There seem to be few children from 4 marriages but i suppose there may be others the records for whom have not survived.

Once again , many thanks ,

Gary.

I did look but I couldn't see a burial for him unfortunately. I could also not see one for Alice either, which might suggest they moved away from Dunham (again assuming it is the same Thomas who married Alice). Dunham is close to the border so it may be worth searching nearby parishes in Lincs.

I did find this will for a Thomas Cottam in Harby - it is probably not your Thomas but may be worth a look to rule it out. Harby burials for that period aren't included in the NFHS burials so I wasn't able to check them.

Hello ,  Sarah Cottam , Thomas's daughter moved to Elston and was eventually buried at Hawton although that of course does not mean Thomas did the same .

I will have a closer look at the will , just in case.

Thanks again ,

Gary
