Help Identifying Uniforms, Please - Paul Godonis
« on: Wednesday 08 April 15 01:44 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know what type of uniforms are pictured?  These men may have been Lithuanian, if that helps.  Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

My first impression on seeing this picture was whether they were wearing railway uniforms - I'm not sure why, perhaps it was the chains of the pocket watches?

I'm probably completely wrong though!

My 1st. impression was Russian Army but was Lithuania part of Russia around WW1 which this looks like?
The cap badges aren't very clear but they look similar to this Russian one.
Regiment looks like Cavalry/Artillery.

This one is a real teaser. It's post 1918. Previously, the Baltic States, Finland and Poland were provinces of the Russian Empire and as such wore normal Russian uniforms. I'm only writing this to get notification of any postings. I think they were from someones private army in the early 1920's trying to keep out the Soviets.

Thank you for your input!  Your hints led me to stumble upon this:

https://www.tumblr.com/search/lithuanian%20war%20of%20independence

The description beneath the photos in the center explains that during the Lithuanian Wars of Independence (1918-1920) soldiers wore sort of makeshift uniforms made from surplus US Army uniforms.  Would you agree that this is probably what we're looking at?

Great, thanks again!  Now to figure out who this person is, as the person I was told it was had left Lithuania many years earlier...
