A.McKay WW1 from Indigo Valley, Victoria Australia
« on: Monday 13 April 15 00:50 BST (UK) »
A local lady is doing a presentation for ANZAC day on WW1 soldiers from Barnawartha & Middle Indigo. North East Victoria Australia.
One soldier she cannot find anything on is A.McKAY
That is it.

from the Federal Standard paper Friday 2nd March 1917 pg 2
   Soldiering

" The honor roll at the Middle Indigo State School contains the names of the following old scholars who are now on active service.:-
J Christie, D. Mathieson, T. Mathieson, J. Devitt, P. Devitt, J. Rohde, E Goodger, J McGrath and A.McKay "

His name appears in many issues of the paper. She has not been able to find records for him.
The Honor Board is also missing from the school.
I was hoping a RC might be able to help.

Thanks Spices

A grant was given out to replace that honor board in Oct 2014 to the Chiltern Athenaeum
http://minister.dva.gov.au/media_releases/2014/oct/va080.htm

Perhaps they still have the honor board?

Here is their contact and web page

The best I can find in the National Archives is an Arthur Adrian McKay born in or near the town of Yarrawonga.
James -Victoria, Australia originally from Keynsham, Somerset.
Janes - Keynsham and Bristol area.
Heale/Hale - Keynsham, Somerset
Vincent - Illogan/Redruth, Cornwall.  Moved to Sculcoates, Yorkshire; Grass Valley, California; Timaru, New Zealand and Victoria, Australia.
Williams somewhere in Wales - he kept moving
Ellis - Anglesey

Thanks that is the dilemma all she has to go on is the initial A.
Have asked senior town citizens if they remember the family to no avail.

The other interesting thing about the honor roll is not all the men on it were born in Barnawartha or seem to have next of kin there.

J Christie J. Devitt, P. Devitt, , J McGrath are listed as born Barnawartha.
http://honouringanzacs.net.au/search-anzacs.php?anzactype=1&search_text=Barnawartha%2C+VIC%2C+Australia

E Goodger (Edward Joseph Goodger born Indigo), so him being on the roll makes sense.

J. Rohde (Maybe James Herman Rohde born Rutherglen, Vic - but I'm not sure, so I can't really link him to your school by his file)
http://honouringanzacs.net.au/view-anzac-searched.php?aid=220657&anzactype=4&search_text=Rohde,%20James%20Herman

A.McKay (To many, to pin one down, need more details like where enlisted? Evidence of second name?)

Many thanks whiteout7, what a great site.

Because the area was mining, farming and vineyards the men/ families could have been working there.
Also Rutherglen/ Chiltern could have been where the hospitals were.

A McKAY is not much to go on is it.

I helped look through old news papers and there was no mention of him coming back on leave.
not that I looked at every copy. The Federal Standard weekly seemed to have a list of enlisted men for all the surrounding towns.

In light of nothing else , this might be a clue to ask the old timers.
"The Sutherland and McKay family who lived in the
Barnawatha area.Their property was at Indigo creek. John and Jessie
Sutherland came from Rogart, Sutherland and so named their property
"Rogart" They arrived in Geelong 1852. Jessie also had a brother James
Mckay who followed her out. He had a daughter in 1899 called Selina
Mckay "

Maybe the A.Mckay fits in with the 'Rogart' property, maybe the author of this might know
