« on: Friday 17 April 15 09:34 BST (UK) »
Hi All

The attached photo was found in old suit case of photos and documents belonging to a cousin of mine and neither of us can identify who the couple is.
I am looking for any details on the photo that may give us a clue as to who they were.
thanking you.

Yours Aye

Hi
That's what surprised me the fact that he is sitting in a photographers studio with a pistol on his belt. Why would the lanyard for the pistol be wrapped around the pistol grip.

I'd say it was circa 1914.

I was wondering if the pistol was a photographer's prop.

I am not sure, I wondered if it was taken before the young man was posted
abroad, 1914 war .A family souvenir.
It would be interesting to know if he came through.
The young woman is very plainly dressed, not even a jacket or hat.
 A lovely clear photo..Viktoria.

I think he is a mounted soldier, it looks like he has riding breeches on perhaps he is a driver, when the pistol was not in use the pistol lanyard would be wound round the grip so it could be holstered without the lanyard causing a hindrance.
Artlllery Batteries were issued with Webley pistols and of nearly half a million horse and mules killed in ww1 many  wounded animals were humanely despatched by pistol.
