Richard Keddy c1770-1780
« on: Tuesday 28 April 15 22:24 BST (UK) »
Hi folks, this is a real longshot, but I am following a hunch that a 4th great grandfather may have been named Richard Keddy, and may have been born in Cumbria, possibly in Wigton or nearby, about 1770-1780 or thereabouts.

My Ancestry subscription has lapsed, although I will renew it later this year.  My question is, would there be baptism records where a Richard Keddy might be found, from this early period?  The English census will be of no use, as Richard would have been in Ireland by 1841.  He might possibly have married a Bridget about 1800 or before, so possibly a marriage might appear too, although this marriage more likely took place in Ireland, and there are no records for his Irish parish prior to 1826, sadly.

Would there be any other leads in the Cumbria records I might try?  As this is a new hunch, and I am unfamiliar with Cumbria, I thought I'd ask here first, to get my bearings.  Many thanks.

That's the very problem.  On this line, I know very little 'for sure.'  I have loads of corroborative evidence of probabilities, but very few records that nail anything comprehensively.  So all I can do is fish for more corroboration, and hope something turns up out of the blue to nail it all, which of course, is extremely unlikely!

Richard Keddy (even his name is based on a very solid hunch, but only a hunch) had a great grandson born in Wigton in Cumbria in 1863.  The father and grandfather were both born in Ireland, and the name Keddy was peculiar to a very small townland in Wicklow at this time.  They only lived in Wigton for a year or two before emigrating to the USA.

However, I see that three generations before, there were Keddys in Wigton in Cumbria, which leads me to guess that the reason they went to Cumbria briefly was because the grandfather's people were there.  So I hope, miserably, to browse the baptisms and marriages to see if anything jumps out at me that might suggest a link.  Like I say, a longshot!

So all I am looking for really is to know where I might begin to search the Wigton / Cumbria baptisms and marriages, and what years are available, if any.  Many thanks.

You need to go back to basic research. No point looking for Richard unless you connect him to this later birth.Who was the child born 1863 and do you have that certificate?Have you checked surnames interest board?

Hi! I'm a decendent of Richard Keddy, and really all the other Keddy's in Killcool/Wicklow Town - I know this was posted years ago, but I've seen multiple posts from you on the Keddy's so if you have any questions at all, I'll answer.
