John Chalmers Allan - buried where?
« on: Saturday 02 May 15 14:00 BST (UK) »
John Chalmers Allan, death NZ 1949/22425, age 70.

Probate Dunedin, John Chalmers Allan, residence Portobello, died 15 June 1949, to Marion Amy Allan, widow.

Marion Amy seems to be Marion Amy Kemshed, married 1909/3098. Have found 3 children so far but there could be others born after 1 May 1915.

Can't find a death for Marion Amy, or a burial for either of them in the Dunedin Cemeteries database.

They may have lived at Momona, because there was a transfer of land there involving John Chalmers Allan, reported in the Otago Daily Times of 14 September 1916. If so, which cemetery might they be buried in?

What I would like to esatblish is whether he is John Chalmers Allan, son of David Allan and Ann Thom, born 12 March 1877 in Montrose, Scotland.

Hi Forfarian

He is in the Dunedin Council Cemeteries database, listed as Allan John CHALMERS.
He was cremated, and ashes scattered. A miner, from Scotland and in NZ 48 years.

http://www.dunedin.govt.nz/facilities/cemeteries/cemeteries_search

The name of the funeral director is on that record.  They are still in business.  If you contact them and gently ask if they still hold the record of the funeral (would possibly be on a card file not a computer) one  can often get  lucky as the funeral directors took details of the deceased, such as birthplace, parents names, children's names etc  for both the service and for the funeral notices that were inserted into the newspapers.

Cheers

If you order a death printout for him, (the death shows in Historical BDM NZ) as long as the notifier knew the parents names they should be on there.

I recently got a printout for a 1829 death, and the extra info was great. It noted the number of  children, and whether they were male or female. Also how long in NZ.

Good value also, cheaper than a Certificate, more information,  and can be emailed to you!

Cheers

And very possibly Marion remarried after John died.......

After his death, she is listed as Marion Amy ALLAN, widow  in the  1949 Electoral Roll for Portobello, Otago. But then nothing.

Found a Marion Amy HAIG death in Otago, b abt 1888

And checking the Dunedin Cemetery database, there she is:
Marion Amy HAIG, died 1963 age 75 years buried in the Anderson's Bay Cemetery. There is a Frank KEMSHED and one other person interred in the same plot.  Same Funeral director as for John.

Electoral Roll:
1954 & 1957: at 216 McAndrew Road. Mornington (1954) (St Kilda 1957), Otago District
Andrew Duffield HAIG, Retired
Marion Amy HAIG,

He was Andrew Duxfield HAIG, who died 1970, buried in Andersons Bay Cemetery also, but with his first wife, Lizzie Georgina HAIG nee VERNOR who died 1948 (married 1915).

Thanks Ambly and jaybelnz. I'll follow that up.

It always pays to try the funeral directors first as often they still have all the information they took to register the death with DIA's and it saves purchasing the printout

Thanks Janette, that sounds like excellent advice.

I have e-mailed the funeral directors, and await developments with interest.

Janette's idea is a good one, I have found that they have extra information that isn't included in the Printout.
