Photos of 1st Batt. Lancashire Fusiliers please?
« on: Saturday 09 May 15 23:09 BST (UK) »
Hi there,
I am looking for any group photographs of the 1st battalion lancs fusiliers perticularly in Burma (Myanmar). My great grandfather died fighting there in June 1944 so the date of the photo would have to be before that. I have had no luck finding him on the couple of photos i have found on the internet.
Thanks,
Pendlelad

What was the date of his death? I have the Battalions war diary for 1944 and I'll post up the page covering his date of death. It's not very thick so there probably won't be much detail but it may be of interest.

Hi Drew5233,
Now that will be interesting! his death date was the 3rd of June.

Thanks and regards,

Hi Jolee,
Yes, that's a nice gesture thank you, he has been in our thoughts especially recently during the VE day celebrations.

Looking in History of the Lancashire Fusiliers, 1939-1945 By John Hallam he would have been killed advancing to Moguang. On the 3rd June a Japanese force at Launn attempted to hold up the advance, and there was a sharp encounter in which many Japanese were killed.

Drew5233,
Oh well, thanks anyway for the information. Its a shame they didn't mention fusiliers when they were killed in the diary itself. I think it must have been an unfortunate lucky shot by the Japanese to kill him if the the fighting was not very intense for our troops. I found this in the 'Chindit vs japanese infantrymen' book online---

Thanks again,

My book has them in a different place-On the map in the book they are a few miles SE of the river and wheel left towards Moguang before they reach the river. My area of interest is France and Flanders Campaign during 1940 so either book may be correct as far as I'm aware. You would get some interest and info I'm sure if you asked on WW2Talk.com as I know one chap on there whose father was in the 1st Battalion and there's 3 or 4 members who specialise in this area.

Cheers
Andy
