William Hawkins
« on: Wednesday 13 May 15 16:31 BST (UK) »
I have been asked by a cousin to find out what I can, about her grandparents Sarah Marsh and William Hawkins. Sarah Marsh is no problem - I have her and her ancestors back into the eighteenth century. All are from the area around Dover so no help is required here on Sarah.

However she has NO information on William Hawkins beyond knowing that

a.) He died in Southwark in 1920 aged 32.

b.) He  married Sarah in 1912 (Dover). FreeBMD confirms this - in the December quarter.

c.) There were two girls Marjorie and Gladwys Minnie both now deceased.

There is a possible candidate in the 1911 census , mother Annie (widow) - William Hawkins born Lydden but I'd like to be sure. Suggestions would be very welcome....

and a baptism for William HAWKINS at Lydden, 25th March 1888, parents William and Annie Maria.

I think the next step for your cousin would be for her to get a copy of her grandparents marriage cert.
That should give name and occupations for the fathers of the bride and groom and ensure that you then follow the right William Hawkins back through the censuses.

Thank yuou all for EXCELLENT replies.

Bearkat - what can I say? I had not seen it though I should have done. I feel rather foolish at omitting something so simple.

Lizdb - absolutely right. I had hoped I'd find another route but she will (if she wants it literally in writing) have to send for the certificate.

Thank you panda40 for your contribution. Sarah is in service in Shepherdswell in 1911 close by.

The suggestions about his brother and the faded genes site will be very apposite if as I believe the William Hawkins from Lydden is the correct one.

So......much appreciated sensible, knowledgeable  and prompt replies. I should use Rootschat more often
