Margaret Thomson Scott - burial 1900 St Aidan.s Cemetery, Bamburgh
« on: Saturday 16 May 15 12:56 BST (UK) »
Greetings,

I have sourced a photo of my ggg grandmother Margaret Thomson Scott's grave which is marked 1900 but I am unable to find her exact date of death so that I can order her death certificate.

http://www.gravestonephotos.com/public/gravedetails.php?grave=367379&personid=780805&scrwidth=1600

I am also trying to trace her husband George Scott who is mentioned on the tomb!

Any help much appreciated.

Diana

Hi Rosie,

Margaret was born 1 April 1820 at Warenford, Northumberland.

She married George Scott on 13 Nov 1845 at Eccles, Berwick Scotland with father Alexander a witness.

Diana

Have you identified the couple in all the censuses, so know when she became a widow?

More info!

Margaret and her husband George Scott (mentioned on the grave stone) were married on 13th November 1845 in Eccles, Berwick Scotland but they shortly afterwards returned to live in Ayer Rajah Penang where George was from. Not sure exactly when but my gg was born in Penang in 1848.

Despite searching Ancestry etc I have been unable to find death records for George (b 1801 Penang,) or Margaret. George has a grave at Northam Rd Cemetery in Penang (dated 7.11.1880) and Margaret's at St Aidan's just dated 1900 but I am trying to prove if these are the actual places where they died, or if they are just memorialised there????? Pls note that Margaret's father Alexander's grave is right next to hers.

Many thanks

Diana

The Berwickshire News, 31 January 1911
Deaths : 4 Walker Street, Edinburgh, January 22, Margaret Thomson, daughter of the late Alexander Thomson, Glororum, Northumberland and widow of George Scott of Ayer Rajah, Penang, in her 91st year.

You should be able to find Margaret's death on Scotlandspeople, perhaps under her maiden name as per the once common Scottish custom of married women retaining their original name, but check both options?

Caledonian Mercury 30 Dec 1844
Died - At Blanerne House Berwickshire on 23d current Lucy Grace wife of George Scott Esq of Penang East Indies

Newcastle Journal 29 Nov 1845
At Eyemouth Church on the 13th inst George Scott, Esq of Penang to Margaret, eldest daughter of the late Alexander Thomson, Esq of Glororum Northumberland

P.S. This means it wasn't Margaret's father who witnessed the marriage - could be a brother. I presume you have a copy of the actual entry in the marriage register? I haven't been lucky enough to have witnesses included in my families' pre 1855 Scottish marriages but different parishes did things different ways.
