NZ death certificate info
« on: Monday 18 May 15 02:10 BST (UK) »
I was given a printout of the death certificate for Harriet Morton who died in Rakaia on 19 October 1915. There is no informant information listed. Is this usual? Is there any way I can find out who the informant was?

Hi Jan

Just to clarify please

... do you have an "official printout of the death registration" (i.e. registry copy of the death)

or "a printout / photocopy" of Harriet's Death Certificate (which will have been transcribed from the register entry of death, but not necessarily contain all the information from the register.)

Hi Lu,

Not sure which one it is - it says it is a "Certified true copy of particulars recorded by a Registrar"  "Issued under the seal of the Registrar on 21 July 2010"

Hi Jan

Mmm ... it sounds like you have a "certified Death Certificate" (in which case not all the information contained in the Registry document is transcribed when a "copy of a Death Certificate" is
requested.)
[ For family history purposes we always recommend purchasing a "printout" of a New Zealand B D or M registration.   This way you get an exact copy of the Registry entry - containing all the information. ]

It might mean having to purchase a "printout" of the death record, unfortunately.   [Or you could perhaps try a cheeky request to NZ BDM saying you have the death certificate which is missing the details of the death informant.   ;D ]

I see there is a Probate record for Harriet (ex Wellington Court - year 1916), but unfortunately it doesn't contain any information on her family.

https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1865481

Also her death notice only mentions late husband.

Are you only wanting to find out who the death informant was ... or can we maybe help you with other information for Harriet  ???

Hi again Jan

Maybe contact the Ashburton District Council - they may have more information concerning Harriet's burial (than that which is shown in their online records).

Hi Lu and Jeanette,

Many thanks for the feedback. I did have a copy of Harriet's probate and death notice but didn't have the Public Trustee notice.

I'm trying to identify the four children listed on Harriet's death certificate, which says "One daughter 45, three sons 50, 48 43". I was hoping the informant was one of them  :-) The informant seemed to know quite a bit about Harriet, including her father's name, the fact that she was born in NSW and the number and ages of her children. These children have been a mystery for years. (See my previous post http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=696622.0) I think they were the children of Harriet and her first husband, William James Brown.

It wasn't until I was looking at another NZ death certificate that I realised the informant information was included.

Lu, thanks for the suggestion to contact Ashburton Council - the burial info might tell me who paid for the grave.
