Help to decipher marriage registration
« on: Monday 18 May 15 13:43 BST (UK) »
Good evening all...nervous newbie here. attached is a partial extract of a marriage registration that my dad obtained in 1988. I need help to decipher 1) Name and surname of parties and 2) below this the section that begins "celebrated Marriage between", and 3 ) Birthplace.

For both parties the Birthplace appears to be Cork and there appears to be an extended bracket after the place name followed by another word.

Thanks for your interest. Regards David

Don't be nervous, we were all new once  ;D

Parties - my guess is Thomas Russell Power & Kate Ann O'Brien.

After Cork I think it says 'Ireland' - shame I expect you were hoping for a placename.....

Josey thank you for your prompt reply! Yes I was very much hoping for a placename! Regards David ps If you could tell me when Thomas was born (note the other part of this document states he was 33 and Kate was 26) however I have a letter from the Church citing the Parish Marriage Register that has Thomas age as 35 and Kate ANNIE O'Brien all other details the same. Oh and when and which ship Thomas arrived in Australia  ;) I do need help to decipher their parents names and professions... pretty sure for Thomas, parents are William Francis Power and Mary Russell. Think I will start a new question, rather than post into this thread!

I suggest in the first instance you have a search of http://www.rootsireland.ie/.

It used to be a pay per view credit site but is now subscription. However you may be able to search the basic index for free, paying for details if you find a possible match. I can find no Thomas Power father William baptised in Cork 1834 +-4 years but 31 Catherine [no Kates or Kathleens] O'Brien 1842 +- 1 year.

Have you searched www.familysearch.org for baptisms?

ADDED: There are some references to a Thomas Power born 1832 on familysearch in the prison registers for Cork :(

in 1848 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KMSW-FP2 - sheepstealing
in 1867 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KM7X-NJR - riot

However there is a Thomas Power marriage in Cork in 1867 [father John] so this well may be the above person, not your Thomas Power...

Well found - I suspect the fact father's name is Wm not William is why it didn't come up on my search!!!
