Hi there fellow Fifers
Here's a puzzler for you all from "Portrait and biographical record of Rockland and Orange Counties, New York. Containing portraits and biographical sketches of prominent and representative citizens of the counties. Together with biographies and portraits of all the presidents of the United States." New York and Chicago; Chapman Publishing Co., 1895
It's with reference to a John Peattie born at "Balcravie Castle, town of Largo, Fifeshire" on 2 January 1831 who took himself to Newburgh, New York, USA via London sometime after 1851 and died there on 6 February 1895. He learned horticulture and botanical gardening with a relative, Robert Peattie, at "Insuire, near Cooper [sic], Fifeshire"
I've scanned the Ordnance Survey Six-inch 1st edition, 1843-1882 for anything resembling "Balcravie Castle" and/or "Insuire" but have drawn a blank.
Can anyone help?
Regards
Chiad Fhear
