Liverpool Record Office/Library - info/advice please
« on: Saturday 06 June 15 19:02 BST (UK) »
I believe that the Library now holds the archives.

I have never visited, either the old record office or the library and have been round and round the library site looking to see if they have a list of available parish records (and non conformist ones) and I can't find one.

I have a rare opportunity to perhaps visit next week, could anyone tell me please if they have these sort of records on microfilm and if I have to book a reader  in advance.

I will try ringing them tomorrow, but am unsure if the local history section is open at weekends.

If anyone is a regular or has visited in the past I'd appreciate an overview so I know what to expect.

Thanks

Boo

Thanks nanny jan, I appreciate you taking the time to help
.
I have been there, round and round it and it 'does' say that they have parish registers but, unless I am missing something, it doesn't tell me which ones and for what years. I tried the catalogue search for a particular church and it said no records. I don't think that's right but am at a loss as to how else to structure the query to get the results I want.

Its 'that' I would like access to prior to my visit. I have found when I have visited other archives, that going through the lists of what they hold helps me to make a 'wish list' of things I KNOW they have so that my limited time at the archives can be better spent.

I am hoping they have parish registers dated after the ones published on ancestry so I can fill in some gaps for the folks born after 1906 (which is the latest RC baptisms in the ancestry database).

thanks again

Boo

Probably best to telephone or email them; the website might not be up to date.

I visited recently - the staff are very helpful!

I was able to see parish registers for a 1925 marriage, and a 1928 baptism.
The PRs are on microfilm.

I visited on a Friday and again on a Tuesday, and there was no need to book a reader.
Haven't been on a Saturday, so I have no idea how busy it gets?

They may not hold Catholic records, they could still be at the church.

Which church or churches in particular are you interested in

They do indeed hold Catholic records, but I am not sure what dates they run to?

My interest was in the Anglican records?! ;D

Thanks KGarrard, that is really helpful. Looking like I may well be able to get there on Monday or Tuesday so hopefully it won't be too busy.

My best bet would be St Oswald, Old Swan, I have baptisms, from the available online database I have access to, for 5 out of 11 children born between 1900 and 1917 and would like a 'full house' :-)
The first 5 were baptised at St Oswald so I have my fingers crossed that I may find the other 6 in there.
I gave up on the catalogue search and went via the NA site which tells me that the Liverpool Record Office ref for these records is 282OSW and the baptism register spans the period 1840-1940. At least now I know I have a fighting chance of them being available.

I'll start making my wishlist, working from the NA site and will ring tomorrow to see if they think I should book a reader in advance.

You will need to register?
I think you will need ID (I just happened to have my passport on me!).

The staff will explain what is where, and may even help you locate the film you need.

I stand to be corrected, but I think the Liverpool FHS are there Tuesday afternoons?
