Parlour family from Merthyr T. Aberdare, Pontypridd, Cardiff
« on: Saturday 09 July 05 06:51 BST (UK) »
Greetings from Australia!
I am trying to find my Welsh Parlour ancestors who came from Herefordshire to Glamorganshire in the mid 1850's. In particular, I am trying to find information about my great aunt, Mary Jane Parlour who was born in Merthyr T. in 1870. Her parents were John George Parlour (b. Merthyr T. 1850. d. Aberdare 1872) and Pamela (nee Davies) - not sure what happened to Pamela after her husband died.
John and Pamela were married in Merthyr T. on 15.2.1869 (I have the certificate).
There is a Mary Jane Parlour married a John Rees in Cardiff in the June quarter of 1889 (free bmd) but I cannot find any information about her after this. Rees is such a popular name, it is like looking for a needle in a haystack! Any suggerstions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Cate

Hi Cate!

welcome to Rootschat - I hope you will find us friendly and helpful here.  :)

freebmd has a death for a Pamela PARLOUR, March 1873 Cardiff - ref: Vol 11a Page 179

If you send for the cert you may find that her daughter is the informant, since she married in Cardiff??? worth a try!

I hope this helps

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Hi Arranroots
Many thanks for your reply. If this is my Pamela Parlour - and I'm inclined to think it is because it is not a common name - her daughter, Mary Jane, and her son, John Henry, would have been just 3 and 2 years old when Pamela died. (Her husband John George had died in 1872 of "confluent smallpox".)  Can you tell me what other info is given on a death cert for that period?
I appreciate your help

Hi Rhys
Many thanks for the info. Following this info through to 1901 census, the only member of that family I can see is Pamela Rees, aged 11 which is the correct age. Did John Rees die and did Mary Jane remarry? As seems to be the case with genealogy, one answer gives rise to a lot of new questions!
I'll try to get the full data from the 1901 census and see who Pamela aged 11 is living with.
Your help is much appreciated

Hi Cate

A death cert for England or Wales would give the address at which the person died, the date of death, their age, sex, name, occupation, cause of death (including how long they had been afflicted before death), signature, residence and description of informant (usually their relationship to the deceased), when the death was registered and the signature of the registrar.  There may be a note suggesting that an inquest would be held, depending on the circumstances of the death.

There is a very good site describing certificates and what to expect of them - cannot for the life of me remember the URL.  Hope fully another Rootschatter will oblige?
