Date for Danish Ancestor?

Can anyone put a date to this man?    The painting has been passed down through the family but I am not sure which generation he is.   Either born c1840 and died 1884 or his father whose dates are unknown but family rumour has him coming from Denmark.   I would love to know.

What is the painting painted on?

Is it paper, canvas, something else?

It looks like it may be from a hand coloured photograph.

You might be right.   It appears to be on a solid piece of material.  Not canvas.   As far as I can remember it was a very thick card.   The broken bit on the corner was repaired some years ago and it was reframed and is so sealed that I am reluctant to open it.

Looks 1860s to me, but only because of the beard..not much of a clue really.  Calling Jim..come in Jim…  ;D

That is really helpful.  He seems to be a man in his prime so presumably the one born 1840.    Many thanks.   He was a seaman so that probably accounts for the beard!
