Public Cottage, Gorsley
« on: Friday 26 June 15 11:26 BST (UK) »
Thomas Hall died in Gorsley in 1895, and according to a newspaper report lived at Public Cottage, Gorsley.

Seems an odd name for a cottage, has anyone come across it before, or have any idea where it might have been please?

In the 1891 Census Thomas Hall is living in Poplar Cottage, Newent.

According to the census Poplar Cottage was in the neighbourhood of Mount Pleasant http://maps.nls.uk/view/101452914#zoom=4&lat=2944&lon=2281&layers=BT

Thanks very much Stan. I knew about Poplar Cottage and Mount Pleasant in 1891, never occurred to me to check the 1911 census for an address, and I wasn't sure if Mount Pleasant and Gorsley were the same place, although they were both near Newent.

So the newspapers got it wrong, and it should have been Poplar Cottage -  did seem like a strange name for a cottage  ;D All of which makes sense, because I believe they had been living in Poplar Cottage for quite a while.

Thank you very much

Sue
