Date for Unknown Relative?

Hello!

We don't know much about this woman except that it's likely my grandmother's paternal relative.

Probably from Roxburghshire or maybe Glasgow area...

But it would help if we had a date to fix on!

Any help please?

Thanks for that date, Jim!  I was wondering if it was as early as that, but couldn't tell for sure....

does anyone have any ideas why she might have had her photo done? Birthday, photo for fiancee etc. Or was there not usually a reason?

She looks as if she's in her early 20's to me.

It could be an engagement photo...or her 21st Birthday....I see she is wearing a ring.

She seems to have lost one of the dangly bits on her necklace, there is a gap there. Hard to tell what the original colour was but I wonder if it is made from jet, which was fashionable as mourning wear from the 1860's on.

Yes, i can see what you mean about the necklace - maybe it was an old one that had been passed on.
I wouldn't have thought any of that branch of the family had any money at all.

The way she's posed almost looks like she's showing off the ring!

It was usual for engaged/married women to display their left hand in a prominent position.

I think it's an engagement photo also (because of the hand) but just thought I'd mention that as she has a book, sometimes that indicates a graduation.
