I am wondering if anyone can help me?
If a couple were taken up in front of church for fornacation, would this happen only if they went to church or even if they weren't a member of the church

They would need to be members or adherents of the Kirk

Dottie, it depends what period you're talking about. The Kirk not only looked after spiritual welfare it was also the social security system, there was no other.

Thank you for your reply.
I am looking at 1878 in foggie, my g grandmother had a child in this year and unless I find some proof my mum won't believe that the man named as her grandfather is right.
I have them in 1881 census living together with her down as housekeeper, is this normal practice do you think?

I take it this is Aberchirder Dottie? The Kirk had lost its hold by that time & the Free Church taken many of its members. The Session might disapprove of immorality but lacked teeth. All the best with the quest.

Yes I have been to the archives, the info I got was a woman with the same name I am looking at but a different man.
When I looked at the marnoch births for 1878 there was only 2, one was my granda and the other is not conected to me.
I am going to have to wait until I go to edinburgh to check for the rest of Banffshire as there were a few and it works out pretty expensive
