Name changes

Was it common for people in Ireland to change their names during the 19th century?

One of my ancestors was called Eugene on a birth certificate but on the parish record his name is written down as Owen. Also his wife's maiden name is Mcswiney on one parish record entry but just plain Swiney on a different parish record entry.

Donovan, Field(Cork, Ireland)

Very common... plus the Mc could be back next generation!!
Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

What you are describing aren't really name changes but different forms of the same names.

If you are going to be researching Irish families then you might find it useful to see lists of Irish/English Christian/first names like this-
