Have you noticed Joseph Howel, aged 39, born Colchester, on the previous page of that 1851 census? Living next door to Rosanna.

There is this:-

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~crossroads/regiments/regiments-artillery.html.

These detail the official unit titles in Canada. Not much help as companies/batteries were always known by their commanders names.

I've tried to find you images of RA uniforms 1800 to 1812 and 1812 to 1815, nothing adequate, tusk, tusk.

The Joseph Howel living next door in 1851, born circa 1812 in Colchester, is probably Rosanna's son. Now to find a baptism...

On Joseph junior's second marriage to Eliza Butt in 1855 (aged 43) he names his father as Joseph Howell, gun finisher. This tallies to some extent with Joseph senior's army record (gun smith).

In the 1861 census, Joseph and Eliza have a daughter Rosina born circa 1856.

So it looks like this Joseph is indeed a son and if so there is a link to Colchester circa 1811/1812.

Given the dates you have, it would appear that Joseph would have been in the 9th Co 4th Bn (from link in reply #10). Given Jane's DOB and the length of time Joseph was apparently in Canada, I suspect the marriage probably took place in Quebec City. I expect a military marriage would probably have taken place at the Garrison Church there, assuming the couple was C of E. Unfortunately, the records between 1800 and 1817 seem to be missing.

Records for the Montreal Garrison Church also seem to be missing for this time period.

If they married in Canada but Rosanna b. England, one might consider that her father was also in the military and they met while her father was posted in the same area.

There are numerous other churches in both cities that could be looked through more or less page by page in case something was missed in the transcription process.

PB

Added: assuming I have found the correct family in 1841, Rosanna indicates she was b. in Warwickshire?
We search for information but it is up to the thread owner to verify that it is correct.

Yeah, sorry, I tend to remember only the place as I was told it should be. Looks as though it is incorrect to say Coughin too, since it may well be Anglia!

I know you've been over it before but it is incorrect to say that she was enumerated on the 1851 England census as being from Coughton, Essex.

Thanks, glad you've been a bit entertained lol.

I was surprised to find anything on O'Hara Baynes. If I was looking for Captain Mercer RHA then no surprise. I'd better go back and see if there's anything else.

Added: Doesn't appear to be anything else.

Thanks so much, I didn't notice, sometimes I check other pages, sometimes I don't do as much as I'd like to.

The tithe records for Essex include a reference to a place called Coughtland in the parish of Great Horkesley, which is about 3 miles north of Colchester. Hither Coughtland, Middle Coughtland, Further Coughtland. In the occupation of Jeremiah Stannard in 1839
