I now have his marriage certificate from 1882 which states his father was called James and at that time was a labourer. It also states that Joseph was a Sargeant in the 2nd Battn. Manchester regiment, suggesting that he had been in the army for sometime to achieve that rank. he left India and probably the army between 1889 and 1893 (the children born in those years were born in India and Leeds respectively).
