1851 & 1861 census - Thirsk area
« on: Sunday 10 July 05 13:06 BST (UK) »
Can anyone with access to the 1851 and/or 1861 census for the Thirsk area please have a look for Joseph Routh.
He was born in 1850 in the Bedale registration district, in the 1901 census he states he was born in Thirsk.

Thank you.

Hi
I have had a look on the 1861 and cannot find him.   It is worth noting that Thirsk is not in the Bedale registration district.  It has its own register office.  If you are sure you have the right birth then perhaps you ought to get the certificate which will give his parents and make it much easier to find them on a census.
He did seem to move around a lot.  Out in India for a while etc.    Do you know how long he was out there?    Did he miss two census years?   When did he marry? Any more snippets of information will help.

I now have his marriage certificate from 1882 which states his father was called James and at that time was a labourer. It also states that Joseph was a Sargeant in the 2nd Battn. Manchester regiment, suggesting that he had been in the army for sometime to achieve that rank. he left India and probably the army between 1889 and 1893 (the children born in those years were born in India and Leeds respectively).
