Patrick Dyer / Dwyer and Maria Colagan
« on: Friday 17 July 15 23:05 BST (UK) »
Hello

Hi i wonder if anyone can help me trace some of my husbands family who came over from Ireland to settle in Manchester.
Maria Colagan 1854 - county rosscommon, to 1895, manchester.
Patrick Dyer / Dwyer - 1855 longford Ireland - to ??after 1911 Manchester

Family stories are that they met on the boat coming over to the UK, however census records show a daughter 1872 Bridget, whereas they got married in 1876 in St anns Church, Manchester, Lancashire, England.

from marriage cert - Patricks father was John Dyre, Maria's father was christopher.

can anyone help me find when they came over to England and where they lived when they first arrived? Or anything about their birth or their parents?

I have also not been able to find Patricks death, in 1911 he was living as a widower with his daughter elizabeth (Cohen) at 5 Paddock St Ardwick Manchester.

many thanks

Gail

Hi There Gail

I'm afraid to trace family in Ireland for the time period that you are talking about you need a lot more information.

You would need their mother's name, including her maiden name.

You then need an exact townland that they came from, not just a county to see if records for that parish still exist.

I suggest trying local Manchester newspapers to see if you can find obits that might mention a townland.

See if they had family living nearby on census, sometimes later family members are easier to trace back.

Check them all on the 1911 Census to see if a townland is mentioned.

BTW Does it say if daughter Bridget was born in Ireland ?

Also, check all the baptisms for their children to try and find possible family as Godparents.

As Ireland was part of the UK at that time you won't find any ships records !

Can you post an image of Mary's surname on her marriage cert ?

I just want to make sure that you are working with the correct surname !

It's probably Colgan but could be another variation !

Hello, On 13/8/1872 Bridget Colgan (sic) was born to Maria Colgan in Strokestown, Co. Roscommon. No father shown. (source Family search)
If this is the right person it is possible therefore that Bridget took the name Dyer after her mother married.

Try the RC registers released recently...
Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.
