Photograph of soldier in the Royal Horse Artillery- Crimean War?
« on: Sunday 19 July 15 18:17 BST (UK) »
Hello,
I have a photograph of a soldier taken in Kidderminster (attached).
On the reverse, a family member has written 'Gt gt Grandfather on Grandma's father's side royal artillery' which would make him William Inett b. 1836 in Shelsey Beauchamp, Worcestershire.
I have looked at other records such as the censuses and marriage and death certificates where the occupation is shown as variations on 'coal merchant'. I have searched in the war records and can find no record of this name.
I am both intrigued and frustrated. Is there anyone who may be able to shed some light on the photograph? I have been looking for answers for a long time!  :-\
Thank you, Emily

The uniform appears to be Royal Artillery from the period.

Compare it to this one:

He may have been a Volunteer (think TA)

Not Crimean War. In 1856 he would have only been 20. This looks like 1870's. Have you seen relevant Census returns for 1861, 1871 and 1881 for occupation. On the face of it, Royal Horse Artillery but, but.

Hi Emily

Have you tried to  find an obituary in a local newspaper/ It might give you any military service.
