In Scotland you need to look for Fatal Accident Inquiries, held under the auspices of the Procurator Fiscal.

For a 1950s FAI the record may have been transferred to National Archives of Scotland in Edinburgh, or it may still be archived at Ayr Sheriff Court.

'jaj'/'ibi',

The full thread re the query from 'Mat' is over on the Common Room.

It can be found at:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,72732.0.html

Though perhaps you have already seen the reference there (from me) to the Univ Dundee site at:
http://www.dundee.ac.uk/forensicmedicine/llb/deathinvestig.htm

There's also (from Falkyrn) a better reference which is to the official Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal site at:
http://www.crownoffice.gov.uk/

RootsChat is a very friendly and helpful forum - enjoy!
