Mayne, Westmeath: Please Help With a Phrase? Address?
« on: Monday 27 July 15 03:49 BST (UK) »
Hi I have a marriage record here from 1811 in Mayne Parish, Westmeath. First, I see the parties as John Gilmer and Catherine Blake. Anyone see it different?
Next, I am having trouble with the very last phrase. It looks like, "in Edil...?
I would appreciate any thoughts.
Thanks!

Goodness me it does look like in Edil but no idea what the rest of the word is - interested to find out!

What comes before the "in Edil" bit?
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

Thank you for your replies Sarah & Milliepede,
I think I may have figured it out. I actually believe it is a Latin phrase, "in Edibus mais" meaning, "In my house." I found some earlier entries in the same collection, where the priest used the English, "In my house" to indicate where the marriage took place. Other entries have the townland (Coole,Dirragh, etc.). But for some reason, these marriages were solemnized at the residence of the Reverend.
If anyone finds any flaws in my theory, please let me know.
Thanks!
