Can you help me find a marriage
« on: Wednesday 05 August 15 18:39 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I am having great trouble finding any details of my grandfather's first marriage, but have the information on his second marriage to my grandmother.  His name was Joseph Croft who lived at South Cockerington, Lincolnshire and was aged 36 years when he married my grandmother, Louisa Cheffings on December 8th, 1909.  It was a register office marriage in the district of Louth.  On the marriage certificate it states that Joseph was a farm labourer and a widower.  I have searched everywhere for evidence of his first marriage with a total lack of success.  I would be most grateful if any of the undoubted experts on this forum could point me in the right direction.

Many thanks and regards,

tjp

He is listed as married in 1901 when living with his parents WilliamJoseph and Betsy in South Somercoates.   I wonder whether this marriage could be worth investigating

Joseph Eley Croft to Maria Emma Tacey or Lilian Rebecca Carter
Marriages Qtr Dec 1892   Louth  7a 1282

Edit - Possibly this Joseph is too old as there is a birth of a Joseph Eley Croft in  Mar Qtr 1870   Spilsby 7a   555

Hello,

Thanks for the v speedy replies.  I am afraid it is not Joseph Eley Croft, his dates are wrong.  My Joseph was born in 1873 and died aged 55 years in 1922.

Kay 99 thanks for your comments.  I will look at the 1901 ref, but although Joseph's mother was Betsy, his second marriage certificate shows his father's name also to be Joseph and not William.

Apologies tjp - Posted reply whilst cooking -  rechecked and Joseph's fathers name listed on the 1901 census was Joseph

Kay

Edit - Your Joseph wasn't at home with his parents in 1891 so a wedding might be in another county

I think this is the couple who married in 1893 on 1901 census living at South Lane, Middle Rasen, Caistor

Joseph Croft 34    Farmers Son    Market Rasen, Lincolnshire
Charlotte    Croft Wife 34 Stixwould, Lincolnshire
Eliza E Carter    Visitor    Single 26 Dressmaker Stixwould, Lincolnshire
Seth    Ellis    Servant     18  Waggoner On Farm

There's also a possibility he was in the Army by 1891 as he would have been about the right age.

Hello,

Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to look into Joseph Croft's first marriage for me, it is much appreciated.  It looks as if I need to keep working on it, but it is only one of the mysteries in my family tree!!   I am sure we all have them.

Regards,

TJP
