Pawn brokers Liverpool
« on: Wednesday 21 July 04 15:34 BST (UK) »
I wonder if some kind person could tell me if there was a pawn shop at 116 Tunnel Road, West Derby in 1917.

My mum was born there, and I believe a relative owned/ran it.
There was a flat above. If anyone has access to a electoral roll
and could help me I would be very grateful.

This info may just get me past my brickwall stage!

Sorry I can't help directly but...

I'm wondering perhaps a Kelly's Directory would help you on this?

Or was there an organisation for registering pawn brokers?

Hi,
I'm going to the record office in Liverpool on Monday, and I'll have a look for your pawn shop, there are quite a few listings for pawnbrokers in the Trade Directories.

Hi FloridaGirl.

I was hoping you would spot my request!!

You seem so very busy helping so many people, that to be honest, I didn't like to ask , I am very new to this,  but very, very much addicted, like most people who are researching their family.

If you can get  me any info on that address and, if you wouldn't
mind, No 7 Jolliffe Street, Toxteth Park, in 1915, I would be
really, really grateful.

I am really at  a standstll with gran's side of the family, and I am just hoping that they ( my grand parents)  were staying with relatives at the time of my mother and uncles birth.

Many thanks

JeannieR

Hi Jeannie,
I found the shop that you asked about but in 1917, it was listed as a watchmakers, It was owned by an Augustus Bradshaw, I checked the 1916 index and the listing was the same.
He could have been trading as a pawnbroker as well, but watchmaker sounds so much better.
When I go to the library again, I'll try and work back from 1915 to see if it was ever listed as a pawnbrokers.

I found a Hughes family living in Tunnel Road, but they didn't share the same names as any of yours.

I'll have a look at Joliffe Street for you as well.

Regards,
Viv. :) :)

Viv.

You have just made me so very, very happy. Augustus Ceaser
Bradshaw, I have just found out by lancashire bmd, was married
to one Louisa Caroline Hughes in 1891!!

I am hoping this is my breakthrough, I had no idea about Gran's
siblings, so I am going into the 1881 census to hopefully find out
more.

You have accomplished for me in less than a week, what I have
been trying to do for 18 months.

My husband really thought we were going to Liverpool for our
holidays.

Has a strange turn of events, I have also found out that my
paternal gg grand father was a jeweller and watchmaker in
Hampshire. Even stranger, is that I was a Jeweller from age 15
to 50, so it must be in the genes.

Thank you so very much once again

Hiya,
If you've got the name of the church they were married in I'll get you a copy of the marriage certificate, but if it's a register office marriage they can only be obtained by sending off for it.
Glad everythings coming together for you, isn't it a buzz when things start happening.
Bye for now,
Viv. :) :) :)

Hiya Jeannie,
I didn't get chance to look for the Joliffe Street entry today, but I've got a copy of the marriage certificate.

Here are the details

Augustus Caesar Bradshaw married Louisa Caroline Hughes 2nd December 1891 in St Cyprians, Edge Hill, Liverpool.
He was 29 she was 20.

Looks like it could have been his sister was one of the witnesses, not quite sure of the other name, at first I thought the other person could have been a Hughes as well, but I've had the magnifying glass on it and I'm not so sure.

The fathers were Joseph Bradshaw (watchmaker)

David Hughes (grocers manager)

Hope you like this

Hi Jeannie,
I've found loads of stuff about your Augustus and Louisa.
I'll contact you tomorrow and tell you where you can find it all, I don't want to spoil it by giving you all the details, it's so much more fun when you come across it yourself.

Did you get my earlier messages around 9 oclock?

A few people have said they couldn't contact me through the site

I re-sent you my e-mail address just in case I'd put it down wrongly.

Speak to you tomorrow,

Viv :o :o :o

ps Liverpool is a great place to come for a holiday, even if it's only to see the buildings, Liverpool Football Club and research family history
