Looking for Nicholas Street in the East End, probably  Shoreditch/Hoxton area, trying to trace Mitchell family furniture makers. Does it still exist??

Welcome to rootschat Millie. (that's my daughter's name  :)

Do you have some approximate dates when they lived in Nicholas Street? (there have been a lot of changes in the area over the years, so having more of an idea what time we are looking at might help).

Did you find the address on a census or certificate?

Good Morning and Welcome to RootsChat  :)

There is a Nicholas Street shown in Hoxton on this old map  between Buckland St and Mintern Street, http://maps.nls.uk/view/96805011#zoom=5&lat=2616&lon=1766&layers=BT
Both these  streets still exist on modern maps but Nicholas Steet does not

Further to Kay's reply, this shows the location against a current map:

http://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/sidebyside.cfm#zoom=17&lat=51.5326&lon=-0.0872&layers=171&right=BingHyb

(you can scroll, zoom, and use your cursor to compare location of streets)

It looks like where part of Nicholas Street used to be is now part of "Cranston Estate". Shame, but sadly the way in big cities.  :(

Thank you for your replies, much appreciated. Yes, I have my grandfather living with his maternal grandparents (his mother died a few days after he was born) in Nicholas St in the 1881 census. Also his paternal uncle, who married his maternal aunt (life does get complicated doesnt it!!) Just to further complicate his uncle has the same name, Henry Mitchell!! There was a rift in the family, my Dad told me little of his fathers background but have discovered that his paternal grandfather married into French Huguenots (have that history) Again my thanks, its sometimes difficult from NZ to find out these things. How I wish I had started when living in the UK
